Army Tank-Automotive and Armament Command (TACOM) Materials Handler Leader in Rock Island, Illinois

About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC). Responsibilities Ensures needed plans, blueprints, material, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Check work is progress and when finished, checks for compliance with supervisors' instructions on work sequence procedures, methods, and deadlines. Perform a full range of warehousing functions including receiving, storing, picking, preserving, disposing, shipping and re-warehousing materials, commodities, or equipment in accordance with established procedures and operating requirements. Pack, unpack, sort, stack, dunnage, warehouse bins, and move items; make in-storage surveillance for obvious need for preservation, maintenance, repacking, vermin control, etc., reporting findings to supervisor for action. Sort a variety of ordnance material including major items, secondary items, repair parts and supplies related to automotive, and combat vehicles, fire control, tool set components and local use supplies. Receive stock from assembly area or accomplishes movement of partial and small complete orders from one or several warehouses and consolidates from shipment; temporarily warehouses stock. Receive and control material for production orders. Perform location surveys and physical inventories on bin or bulk items in closed or open storage areas. Set up and operate a variety of packaging machines. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 1 year by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Materials Handler Leader without more than normal supervision. The work of the position normally includes:1) serving as a working leader of 6-8 employees in accomplishing trades and labor work; 2) demonstrating proper work practices; 3) inspecting subordinates' work to ensure proper procedures are followed; 4) operating material moving equipment and vehicles to move, load, unload, transfer and stack or unstack palletized goods from one location to another; 5) Check work in progress and when finished, check for compliance with supervisors' instructions on work sequence procedures, methods, and deadlines. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. Ability To Lead or Supervise Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORT: Performs work on hard surfaces and is required to stand for extended periods of time, and to bend, stoop, and work in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. May lift and carry items that weigh up to 40 pounds, with heavier items being moved with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is done inside or outside in areas that may be hot, damps, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. May be exposed to cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock. May be exposed to dust, dirt, grease and solvents and exposure to toxins or chemical fumes. Work may require wearing protective clothing such as steel-toed shoes, rubber gloves, or rubber aprons.
