University of Rochester Accountant I in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

General Purpose:

This position reports to the Director of Gift Accounting and Reporting and performs cash control, revenue reconciliation and management, and other accounting and analytical activities relating to contributions received throughout the Office of Advancement at the University of Rochester. Position deposits and reconciles cash receipts, verifies proper crediting and recording of contributions in the Advancement gift system and UR accounting system that aid in the integrity of the data used for campaign goals and strategy as well as the University’s accounting system and financial statements. Tracks and extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems to analyze and identify data or process irregularities for remediation, and to produce regular reports on Advancement gift operations. Exercises independent judgment and applies a working knowledge of internal and external standards, regulations, and applicable laws when resolving non-routine accounting matters.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Perform cash receipt deposit of contributions for various entities under the University of Rochester and affiliates. Record, classify, and summarize accounting transactions requiring knowledge of accounting policies, procedures, and systems within the department. Compile documents and verify accuracy of work prior to posting receipts to the general ledger. Special projects or tasks as needed in support of the cash handling and deposit.

  • Review and reconcile daily reports and transmissions from banks and external vendors against internal records, logs, and the Advancement database. Reconcile bank accounts and general ledger postings for UR data provided from external sources. Check UR ledger and Advancement database accounting transactions to locate and resolve discrepancies. Initiate and monitor transfers to reconcile the Advancement database with University ledgers. Review and reconcile gift holding accounts for affiliates and programs. Run reports monthly, monitor the activity, and suggest accounting transactions when needed.

  • Data Integrity and Maintenance: Analyze problems associated with the Advancement database and make recommendations for solutions. Where error trend indicates system defects, consult with or refer the matter to the appropriate supervisor, presenting recommendations and seeking guidance as to the course of action to be taken.

  • Work with various internal customers to understand their informational and business needs, using efficient analytical approaches to business challenges.

  • Participate in the preparation of quarterly financial statements and related footnote disclosures in accordance to US GAAP.

  • Prepares a variety of routine financial statements or accounting reports for which the format has been established.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

  • 1 year of professional accounting experience

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication skills and attention to detail required. Position requires applicant to have strong Microsoft Office skills. The applicant needs to have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment within tight deadlines.
