Minimum Qualifications

  • High school Diploma or GED from an accredited educational organization

  • Current CDL (Class A) license with Manual Transmission

  • Three (3) consecutive years of recent truck driving experience.

  • Clean Motor Vehicle Report with no criminal convictions and ability to pass a drug test.

  • A Working knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures related to FMCSA and DOT

  • Working knowledge of National and Regional Accreditation standards related to CDL Driver Training

  • Must keep an up to date file on all CDL drivers to include of the license and DOT physical for all students.

  • Ability to use technology to access data, maintain records, generate reports, communicate with others, and facilitate learning

  • Strong commitment to and passion for the mission of Bossier Parish Community College

  • Ability to travel to different campuses (Bossier City, Natchitoches, and Many) and community partners within Northwest Louisiana as needed

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear and handle or feel objects and controls.

  • Must have physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office equipment such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.

  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 10 pounds.

  • Must be capable of sitting in stationary position for 50% or more of time.

Job Concepts

The CDL / Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO) Instructor will be located at the Natchitoches Campus of Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC) and will support Commercial Driver’s License training for all campuses. Some evening and weekend duty are anticipated with this position. Reporting to the Director of Workforce Development, the CVO Instructor provides classroom instruction and behind the wheel training in preparation for the Commercial Driver's License (Class A) examination. In addition to providing professional supervised training to new and existing drivers, this role is responsible for implementing safety and compliance measures according to Federal Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and procedures. The CDL/CVO Instructor provides classroom instruction in assigned classes and maintains office hours for student consultation. Entry-Level Driver Training includes reviewing student coursework utilizing an approved online curriculum, demonstrating driving techniques through training on a state-of-the-art driving simulator, and intensive small group behind-the-wheel instruction.

Examples of Work

  • Use established curriculum to prepare and develop the knowledge and skills of drivers seeking training and/or certification

  • Evaluate and review students' progress in attaining goals and objectives

  • Conduct behind-the-wheel training and evaluate student progression on a consistent basis.

  • Ensure driver mastery of all driving functions, including lane control, backing, shifting, axle weights, tie down procedures, safety, etc.

  • Teach drivers to promptly identify and diagnose the condition(s) of critical vehicle components when conducting pre-trip, en-route and post-trip vehicle inspections

  • Ensure trainees understand how to use all on-board vehicle communication and routing devices as well as electronic and written logs.

  • Coordinate student enrollment to program which includes the collection of applications, necessary documentation, and materials.

  • Utilize technology to facilitate learning and to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others.

  • Maintain and monitor the upkeep for all associated program equipment, tools, manuals, and supplies. Works with campus property manager to coordinate maintenance and repairs as necessary.

  • Consults with Campus Administrator in the promotion of the program to the public.

  • Teach map reading classes

  • Prepare and provide course syllabi and instructional materials to students consistent with course objectives

  • Evaluate students on comprehension and performance on practical techniques and providing career and academic advising for students

  • Advise students regarding their grades and progress in the course(s)

  • Meet all scheduled classes within the appropriate timeframe

  • Attend and participate in required program meetings and activities

  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities and partnerships with Business and Industry

  • Assist with recruiting students, potential employers for completers, and potential instructors for the program

  • Fulfill professional assignments in accordance with the Bossier Parish Community College calendar and contractual obligations

  • Adhere to department and college policies, standards, and procedures

  • Perform other duties as assigned
