The Arkansas State Police (ASP) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Examiner is responsible for administering knowledge and skills tests for Commercial Driver’s License applicants from the general public and city, county, and state agencies. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.

Administers pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and a road test. Administers knowledge tests required for CDL (general knowledge, air-brakes, combination vehicle, hazardous materials, tanker, doubles and triples, passenger, school bus) by utilizing automated testing computer system or written tests. Schedules appointments for CDL skills tests by phone, fax, email, or in person. Serves as ASP Driver’s License Examiner as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Administers knowledge tests required for CDL (general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicle, hazardous materials, tanker, double and triples, passenger, school bus) by utilizing automated testing computer system or written tests. Schedules appointments for CDL skill tests by telephone, fax machine, in person, or by e-mail. Serves as ASP Driver's License Examiners as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of state and federal driver's license laws. Knowledge of federal and state laws on commercial driver's license (Title 49 CFR). Ability to administer CDL skill tests. Ability to mount and dismount commercial motor vehicles. Ability to review vehicle related documentation on both commercial motor vehicles (verify Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and non-commercial vehicles. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Ability to maintain files. Ability to calculate scores from CDL knowledge and skill test and transfer them to appropriate forms.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus, one year of experience working with the general public as a driving instructor or related field. Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License or must possess a Class B or C and obtain a Class A within 6 months of hire and have at least one year of driving experience in a commercial motor vehicle (tractor trailer truck). Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB-RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REIEW COMMITTEE.
