Job Summary

The School of Coastal Resilience in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi at the Gulf Park campus invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure-track, Visiting Assistant Professor of Film Studies for the 2024-2025 academic year. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Film Studies or a related discipline with a film specialization by the time of appointment; will be expected to teach general courses for non-majors, advanced core Film Studies courses, a basic production, and a screenwriting course in our B.A. degree program in Film; will have the opportunity to teach film theory, history, and criticism seminars geared to their area of expertise.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the Film program, possibly including evening or online classes

  • Maintain an active research and/or creative project agenda

  • Engage in student recruitment and advising

  • Contribute to the mission of the school, college, university and wider community through campus and professional service

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Film Studies or in a related discipline with a film specialization. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with fellow faculty to advance the Film program. Familiarity with use of the primary film industry tools and equipment, including cameras, lighting, editing software, etc. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents such as equipment safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Preferred Qualifications

At least three years of college-level teaching with a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and academic service. Scholar-practitioner with a strong foundation in film studies and production. Knowledge of screenwriting conventions and ability to teach courses in screenwriting and foundation production courses. Experience working on hands-on experiential projects that engage students in community service. Background in the environmental humanities or research interest in film and the environment, and the ability to contribute to the School of Coastal Resilience’s interdisciplinary Sustainability Studies degree program
