Job Overview:
Organize and administer individualized age-specific professional care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital in support of medical care. Supports philosophy, objectives along with the mission and vision of Saint Barnabas Medical Center and the Department of Nursing. Practices in accordance with the N.J. State Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics for Nurses, Department of Health Regulations, TJC requirements and other regulatory agencies. Participates in patient teaching and discharge planning. Participates in unit Performance Improvement evaluation and activities.
Qualifications:
Required:
Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing
Preferred Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
Completion of all Orientation requirements of Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center
Successful completion of all orientation programs
Preferred:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or currently matriculating
Certifications and Licenses Required:
Current Registered Nurse License in the state of New Jersey
Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
NRP certification or completion of its requirements within 90 days of hire to the unit
I.V. certification from an approved facility or completion of those requirements
Scheduling Requirements:
Per Diem
Day shift
4 12.5 hour night shifts per month, two of the shifts on a weekend
Essential Functions:
Complies with unit and scheduling guidelines. Delegates and prioritizes work assignments according to the individual associate's competence and patient care needs. Demonstrates understanding of/states blood administration policy and procedure. Evaluates effectiveness, interventions and revises plan of care accordingly. Implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and Nursing Department. Initiates IV sticks, maintains IV sites and monitors IV fluids. Provides IV care and documents using established policies and procedures. Initiates/develops multidisciplinary care plans and discharge plans in accordance with department standards and using appropriate tools and documents appropriately; uses Logicare. Integrates psychosocial, physical, nutritional and rehabilitation needs of the patient in-patient care and discharge planning. Performs and documents accurate/appropriate physical assessments as indicated by patient s condition. Performs assessment and reassessment of patients according to applicable department standards and identified tools and documents. Performs interventions in accordance with current policy and procedure, safety guidelines and infection control principles.
Prepares patients appropriately for OR, including Site Verification procedures. Receives patients from OR efficiently as well and documents correct vital sign information and interventions.Provides patient/family education according to the plan of care and documents same. Recognizes signs and symptoms of pain, documents correctly and manages interventions. (NIPS in Nicu). Sets goals and formulates appropriate multidisciplinary interventions to meet these goals. States procedure of initiation and response to Code White situations. States proper mechanism for activating codes, demonstrates understanding of code cart check and procedure for replacing items on cart.Transmits pertinent patient information to appropriate individual (i.e., MD, supervisor, discharge planner, social worker, etc.) using SBAR for hand-off communication. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient s age specific needs. Utilizes the nursing process with a multidisciplinary approach in the delivery of patient care.
