Amazon Web Services is seeking a Product Sustaining Engineering Manager to oversee the Product Sustaining Engineering team. The Product Sustaining Engineering team is a part of a global engineering team responsible for the design and operation of products used within our rapidly expanding data center foot print. This position can be based out of Austin, TX, Herndon, VA or Columbus, OH and will be expected to work from office a minimum of 3 days per week.

The Product Sustaining Engineering team at Amazon collaborates with the Product Development team to gain a deep understanding of all facets of each product as they are being developed and tested then support the product through its operational life. You will have exposure to teams and leaders across the entire company. You will have a direct impact on our bottom line and the ability to improve things for our customers. You will be part of a growing, fast paced, and fun team. You will have ownership and responsibility for defining, developing and executing processes that deliver both savings and productivity for Amazon. Your work will trigger significant fleet operational improvements while actively collaborating with development teams and customers around the world.

As an Engineering Manager at Amazon, you will be working with other internal groups as well as external groups including engineering service providers, manufacturers, vendors, inspectors, third party testing labs and contractors.

Amazon has a global presence. Travel will be necessary but shouldn’t be more than 30%. International support will be part of the job, and some international travel may be necessary. Support could consist of leading international projects and could require developing engineering packages. An understanding of international electrical design requirements is helpful but not necessary.

Key job responsibilities

As the Product Sustaining Engineering Manager, your primary responsibilities will be to establish a clear vision and roadmap for the team, define roles, responsibilities, deliverables, goals, and stakeholders. You will lead the team to success by:

• Managing the overall performance of the Product Sustaining Engineering team and fostering the growth of team members.

• Collaborating with other teams to ensure the successful delivery of Product Sustaining Engineering's deliverables and duties.

• Identifying opportunities for product improvements and driving those improvements in partnership with other teams.

• Building strong relationships with key stakeholders, including customers, vendors, and internal teams.

• Ensuring compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations.

• Managing the team's budget and resources.

• Providing regular updates on the team's performance and progress to key stakeholders.

• Working with product development teams to understand product design and specifications, and taking over technical ownership and product engineering support once development is complete.

• Collaborating with partner teams to refine scope and engagement methods and opportunities, and driving adoption of key initiatives across the organization.

  • Defining specifications for product inventory and install database, and systems that track failure metrics of products, including critical subcomponents.

• Reviewing and approving product documentation prior to launch.

• Developing operations and maintenance processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

• Defining product performance metrics and developing product data dashboards in partnership with Reliability and Quality Engineering teams.

• Reviewing statistical analysis of reliability data and providing engineering solutions to recurring field issues.

• Conducting failure analysis for products, driving actions for root cause analysis with vendors, and approving corrective actions.

• Supporting correction of errors (COEs) and Andons.

• Soliciting AWS Field Engineering and Operations teams' feedback for field issues and/or feature requests.

• Driving iterative product designs, firmware revisions, and process/documentation improvements.

• Working on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

• 5+ years of experience with product design, development, certification or field support of power distribution equipment.

• 5+ years of experience in a leadership or management role.

• Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders.

• Experience in developing and implementing processes, KPIs, and tooling.

• Experience in managing a team of engineers or technical professionals.

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally to improve products and/or processes.

• Knowledge of function and deployment of electrical infrastructure products in data center environment.

• Knowledge and able to interpret electric code NEC, NFPA, UL891, UL508, UL1066, UL1558, ANSI C37.

• Experience with protection and control schematics and manufacturing wiring drawings.

• Experience in Engineering design, manufacturing, quality control or field issue resolution of electrical data center products.

• Knowledge of typical data center designs/architectures and industry design trends.

• Demonstrated ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management in a high-level review.

• Possess leadership and problem-solving skills, be a motivated, highly dependable individual.

• Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role

• Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role
