DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES Public Health Vaccinator - Vocational Nurse in GAINESVILLE, Texas

Job/Position DescriptionUnder the direction and supervision of the public health nurse supervisor and medical supervison of the Regional Medical Director, the licensed vocational nurse provides highly complex (senior-level) vocational nursing work. Work involves providing for the care, treatment, and general welfare of patients including providing immunization services for routine and emerging vaccine-preventable diseases, and limited patient health education. Work supports a response-ready public health workforce including supporting COVID-19 prevention efforts through expanded vaccination clinic availability, ensuring high vaccination coverage rates for vaccine preventable diseases, as well as prevention efforts for all vaccine-preventable diseases. Oversees preparation and maintenance of patient immunization records, and reviews documentation for completeness. Evaluates nursing intervention outcomes and confers with other health care team members as necessary. Administers medication orally, or by injection. Monitors patients before, during, and after treatments and procedures. Collects specimens for laboratory examination and performs routine laboratory tests on samples and appropriate patient screening tests and questionnaires. Maintains records pertaining to medication, adverse events and illnesses. Participates in conducting therapeutic programs. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Must comply with HHS, DSHS, TX Dept. of Public Safety applicable policies/procedures/standards.Essential Job Functions(45%) PUBLIC HEALTH VACCINATION SERVICES: Conducts and coordinates immunization clinics in assigned areas in PHR 2/3. Administers vaccines according to CDC guidelines and ACIP recommendations, PHR 2/3 Standing Delegation Orders and PHR 2/3 Public Health Nursing Policy and Procedures. Follows recommendations and requirements for eligibility, vaccine administration, documentation and confidentiality. Completes reports and documentation in accordance with approved nursing practices. (30%) PUBLIC HEALTH DISEASE EVALUATION SERVICES: Performs disease intervention, surveillance, and prevention functions around Tuberculosis, HIV/STD, Perinatal Hepatitis B and Immunizations. Prepares and maintains appropriate confidential client records per agency standards and HIPAA. Assists public health programs to provide required client screening, medication administration per PHR 2/3 Standing Delegation Orders, venipuncture to assist in client evaluation, shipping and handling specimens and independent home visits.(15%) VACCINE MANAGEMENT: Coordinates vaccine inventory in compliance with Texas Vaccines for Children vaccine management guidelines including day to day cold chain requirements. Maintains accurate vaccine inventory every month. Keeps temperature log for the refrigerator and freezer. Transfers vaccine as needed. Maintains accurate documentation in IMMTrac 2 and TWICES. Assists with completion of required monthly/weekly/daily vaccine utilization and waste reports. (10%) DISASTER RESPONSE/RECOVERY: Being required to work other than normal business hours in order to respond to public health emergencies. May require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
