Work Unit|Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories

Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories ( VDL ) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( VDL ) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory processes over 120,000 accessions per year. The laboratory performs approximately 1,400 necropsies on a variety of domestic and exotic animals each year and evaluates over 30,000 histopathological slides for animal owners, veterinarians, and researchers.

The Colorado State University VDL currently has 14 anatomic pathologists and 8 clinical pathologists active in pathology service activities. Position Summary

The Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( CSUVDL ) in Fort Collins, Colorado is seeking applicants for an Administrative Professional Research Scientist (Wildlife Veterinary Pathologist) position in response to an increasing demand for wildlife pathology services and growing concerns for investigation of diseases at the domestic/wildlife interface. This is a one year position and may be renewed, based on existing caseload and funding availability. This is a three-quarter time (0.75) position and is eligible for benefits, including various insurance plans and generous retirement contributions.

Required Job Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent degree and a research graduate degree (MS or PhD) are required.

  • American College of Veterinary Pathologists board certification is required.

  • A minimum of five years of experience working in wildlife pathology and research in a professional position is required.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience investigating and researching diseases of Rocky Mountain wildlife is preferred, including but not limited to, respiratory diseases of bighorn sheep and chronic wasting disease of cervids.

Essential Duties

Job Duty CategoryWildlife Research

Duty/Responsibility

Develop, organize, and conduct original, applied laboratory and field research on emerging and remerging wildlife disease problems. Research topics of particular importance to the CSU VDL . These topics could include bighorn sheep respiratory disease management and transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.

Specific duties include the following:

-Design and conduct laboratory, captive animal, and field experiments to test hypotheses regarding wildlife diseases.

-Search for applicable requests for proposals and write and submit proposals for grant funding.

-Develop and apply experimental protocols, gather data, analyze and interpret data, and develop corresponding laboratory and management applications of experimental results.

-Set priorities and choose specific research objectives that are most likely to generate data with clear results and applications to disease management.

-Publish results of scientific research in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

-Present research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.

-Develop tools for managing diseases at the wildlife/domestic interface. These tools may require not only scientific support for the concept, but also buy-in from both wildlife and agriculture partners.

Job Duty CategoryVeterinary Pathology Services

Duty/Responsibility

This position will provide wildlife veterinary pathology services to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This will include biopsy and necropsy service on wildlife pathology cases. VDL clients include both internal and external submitters and a wide variety of sample types are submitted from all animal species. Caseload may involve infectious (including zoonoses), toxic, nutritional, or other disease processes as well as forensic investigations. Duties may require rare field investigations.

When on biopsy service, this position will be expected to read a minimum of 6 biopsy cases per hour (with exceptions for complex cases). Slides can be scanned into digital images for examination or physically reviewed.

When on necropsy service, this position will be expected to handle wildlife caseload (anywhere from 1-15 animals per day). During necropsy service, this position may be asked to provide education to veterinary students on necropsy rotation or anatomic pathology residents. This position will also consult with our branch laboratories to provide necropsy consult services and necropsy histopathology for branch lab wildlife cases.

Results interpretation will be submitted in the VDL laboratory information management system ( LIMS ). Results are expected to be accurate and timely. This position will be expected to meet all stated VDL turnaround times and provide exceptional customer service to VDL clients. This position will be required to return client contacts and consult with clients promptly, as needed.

This position will be expected to work directly with local, state, and federal wildlife agencies and stakeholders to assess needs and provide services to these entities.

Duty/Responsibility

This position will help coordinate various wildlife special projects for the VDL , which could include projects such as diagnostic test development, attending wildlife meetings to provide updates on VDL activities, and assisting with strategic initiatives. Work with diseases at the wildlife/domestic interface will require relationships with both wildlife and agriculture partners

This position will be required to maintain professional development activities to qualify for veterinary license renewal and maintain ACVP diplomate status.
