The Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of underground infrastructure including Natural Gas and regulator stations and vaults, Electric primary and secondary lines including J-boxes and vaults, water lines, gas and water valves including electronic markers, wastewater lines, and stormwater collection system so they can be marked to help prevent and/or minimize accidental damage by contractors or other digging near utility lines (Blue Stake Program).

Responsibilities

• Must have the ability to work with minimal supervision and be able to deal with customers and contractors in a professional manner in addition to normal duties.

• Must follow all company safety, quality, and operational policies and procedures.

• Use provided instruments and training to accurately locate and mark underground utilities.

• Use provided as-built maps and other client records to assist in locating the lines.

• Some after-hours and on-call are required.

• Must be able to use a computer and a variety of specialized sensitive electronic equipment to locate utility lines and valves in the right-of-way and utility easement.

• Supports the project Safety Plan through personal involvement in all aspects of safety, including training and attention to the adherence to safety requirements pertaining to particular trades or skills.

• This position has been designated as Mission Critical. Mission-critical personnel are defined as those required to meet the Installation’s safety (including inclement weather) and security needs during lockdown conditions.

• This position may be part of an emergency management/response team as required by the company to meet contract requirements.

• Performs other tasks as directed by supervisor/site management.

• Must be able to lift 75 pounds.

• Must adhere to the Lockout/Tagout Program.

• Responsible for tools, test equipment, and vehicles.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School diploma

• Minimum two (2) years full-time employment experience in underground or utility construction-related work involving some responsibility for reading and interpreting project plans, blueprints, electronic quarter section, and plat maps, or related materials; OR

• Two years (2) full-time employment experience using electronic locating devices.

• Possess a valid State Driver’s License and be deemed insurable by company policy

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Map and print reading skills required.

• This position requires some light manual labor working outdoors and work is performed under all weather conditions.

• Ability to read, write, and receive written and or verbal instructions in English.

• Possess communication skills to interface with co-workers and customers.

• Ability and willingness to work long hours and weekends during emergency conditions.

• Ability to read and interpret electronic quarter section and plat maps to facilitate locating utility lines.

• While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee may use repeated motions that include the arms, wrists, hands and/or fingers. The employee is occasionally required to walk, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
