Summary

Reporting to the Office of Financial Aid, the Assistant Director of Financial Education and Engagement evaluates, strategically develops, promotes, and delivers financial aid educational programming including campus outreach, federal aid program-specific counseling, financial literacy programming, and leveraging technology to engage various audiences. Programs are directed at prospective students and families, currently enrolled students, alumni, and campus stakeholders. The position requires strong communication skills and the ability to make independent decisions.

This is a term limited, two-year position. Position will be renewable pending available or continued funding.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff, in support of the university's mission and commitment to academic quality, accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members, and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to diverse and inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Responsibilities*

  • Create and teach financial education courses and workshops on behalf of the Office of Financial Aid.

  • Engage campus stakeholders to identify knowledge gaps, increase the accessibility of, and provide additional training and information on relevant financial aid topics.

  • Review and analyze available financial literacy programs and materials for internal and external stakeholders, including developing, managing, and updating content where needed.

  • Participate in special projects and office initiatives to engage students (current and former) on the topic of financial empowerment and financial aid resources.

  • Evaluate data from existing programs to identify opportunities for new initiatives and to strategically leverage technology to serve students and families.

  • Ensure the accessibility of and diverse representation in Office of Financial Aid financial education materials.

  • Develop, manage and update outreach focusing on prevention of student loan default. Advise borrowers on student loan repayment strategies.

  • Monitor retention and success of high risk populations such as, but not limited to, first generation students, low income students, students from underperforming high schools, etc.and develop targeted financial education programming to support these groups.

Required Qualifications*

  • Masters degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of experience working in the student financial aid field

  • Considerable customer service experience and experience with handling confidential information.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equal opportunity. Experience with members and work environments of a diverse background and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to learn and interpret university, state and federal regulations/policies - position will exercise discretion and independent judgment with regard to matters of significance.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Two years of supervisory experience

  • Experience teaching or advising students on financial literacy topics

  • Experience with student information systems such as Oracle PeopleSoft system, TeamDynamix, ChatBot AI programs.

  • An understanding of the policies and procedures of higher education institutions, especially that affect enrollment management and registrar functions

  • Knowledge of FERPA and other federal/state laws and regulations related to higher education

  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate innovative practices into the workplace to enhance effectiveness and efficiency.

The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of minimally three days on-site and two remote days. Thursdays are required as an on-site work day for all.
